A nation that has more copycats than innovators
One thing about Malaysia is that when a new business modal has been proven by the markets, copycats will come out in an ultra fast way.
Think of Old Town Cafe and all the Wannabe Town Cafe.
It seems that very few people will ever bother taking the risk of exploring new opportunities.
They just want to follow, follow and follow.
In western entrepreneurship culture, differentiation is a big thing.
People who want to invest in you will ask you how do you differentiate your business with the existing one.
If your idea is about building a platform 99% similar to Facebook, no one will ever bother talking to you.
But if you tell others that you're making an open source version of Facebook like what these guys did, you get the attention.
Malaysian businessman just fails to realize that the market is full of opportunities.
You can always play this game very differently.
So I think that the key of making a new business sustainable is by setting the entry level high.
But this is a very hard skill to learn.
We must always have a smart plan for this before we even starting a new business.
There's no point digging out a new opportunity only to let everyone else sharing the pie.
